(April 4, 2003) Yellow Ribbon Debate

As a show of support for our troops in Iraq, almost every tree and lamp post on Burlingame Avenue, a major retail street, is decorated with yellow ribbons.

But a Palo Alto man is threatening a boycott of Burlingame businesses because he claims the ribbons are illegally placed on public property. Private displays on public property is currently forbidden under Burlingame municipal code.

While many Burlingame residents agree the Palo Alto man is within his rights to object, most Burlingame residents and retail shop owners interviewed by the press from across the nation support the yellow ribbons.

The Mayor of Burlingame and the City Council are planning to meet to create an emergency ordinance.
